Lake Mendocino Hikes.

With a network of hiking trails spanning 15 miles, there's plenty to explore at the Lake Mendocino Recreation Area. For a short, fairly easy hike, the Shakota Trail runs along the western part of Lake Mendocino past the Pomo Cultural Center and the Overlook Day Use Area. If you'd like more of a challenge or a longer day hike, start in the Bushay Campground and follow Lake Mendocino's eastern shore. The trail ends at Coyote Valley Dam.

Lake Mendocino Fishing.

Fishing is a popular pastime at Lake Mendocino Recreation Area, and there are plenty of spots from which to choose. But what kind of fish might anglers find in the lake? Largemouth bass prefer shallow, warm waters, and can often be found hiding out in vegetation. Smallmouth bass like colder, faster waters, and can be caught around trees, logs, and rocks. They're also quite tasty. Striped bass are found in the deeper, colder parts of Lake Mendocino. Bluegill fish are often hiding under docks or in vegetation. A fishing license is required for those over 16 years of age.

There are plenty of other enjoyable activities at Lake Mendocino in addition to hiking and fishing. Bring your flying discs-otherwise known as Frisbees-and challenge yourself to Lake Mendocino's Disc Golf Course. Pack a picnic-there are 100 picnic sites and shelters in Lake Mendocino's 7 day-use areas. You'll also find playground structures for the little ones. Boating on the lake is permitted for a small fee, and there are even a few waterside campsites for those looking for a unique camping experience. And of course, swimming in Lake Mendocino, especially during those hot summer months, is one of the most popular pastimes of all.
